How it works

Four steps to your first claim

You become the Canadian employer. The US company stays the client. VanHack handles everything in between.

1

We introduce the engineer

Vetted from 500,000 tech professionals, already employed by a US company, ready to relocate.

2

You sponsor, we administer

Licensed consultants run the entire visa process at no cost. 2–4 months to relocation.

3

You invoice the US client

Salary plus a 15% fee, paid at the start of each month. No day-to-day management.

4

You claim SR&ED

Split the proceeds 50/50 with VanHack — avg $25K to you, every year.

Why the work qualifies

The engineer does qualifying R&D from Canada for a US client — so you claim SR&ED on it. More refundable credit, no new headcount, no change in project scope.

Payment & payroll

Predictable, monthly, in advance

The engineer joins your payroll like any other employee. Typical salary: $100,000/year.

US client pays payroll, benefits, and your fee at the start of each month

You pay the engineer as a T4 employee on your payroll

VanHack covers the $1,000 visa fee and handles the paperwork

De-risked

What if it goes wrong?

Risk: employer liability as the end employer

VanHack agrees to take on any legal fees associated with the employee relationship.

Risk: the SR&ED claim is denied or reduced

VanHack won't invoice you at all — or invoices only 50% of what's actually approved.

Impact

Income for you. A new life for them.

FAQ

Common questions

From agency owners evaluating the program. Something else on your mind? Get in touch.

Does my company employ the engineer (T4) once they arrive?

Yes — that's what makes their work SR&ED eligible.

Do we need to offer an office?

No, the engineers work fully remotely.

Who pays employer EI and CPP contributions?

The US client — they pay a 15% markup on salary that covers these costs.

How are payments made by the US company? Do they pay us directly based on invoices?

Yes — the funds are paid directly to you via wire transfer during the first week of each month.

Who pays for accrued vacation or severance?

The US client pays for any extra costs like accrued vacation and severance.

What happens if the US client ends the agreement?

You can let the engineer go — they can stay in Canada for the remainder of their 3-year work permit, and VanHack will help them find a job through our recruitment business.

Who does the SR&ED claim? Consultants usually take a 20% success fee.

Your SR&ED consultant. Our fee is calculated after their 20% — we split the remainder with you 50/50. If you don't have a consultant, we can introduce you to a few options.

Does the SR&ED project run under our own company?

Yes, the work is done in your company — as a separate SR&ED claim from your internal projects.

Not all engineering work qualifies as SR&ED — is the work innovative enough?

Yes, we check for this before making the introduction. You can also meet the engineers and verify this beforehand.

Does VanHack take a share of our entire SR&ED claim?

No — only the SR&ED claim tied to the US client project.

If the agreement is terminated, is the 50% still owed on earlier introductions?

Yes, our fee applies to all SR&ED from revenue we helped you generate.

Who carries the insurance and liability for work performed for the US client?

Since they're your employee, you carry the liability — however, VanHack will indemnify you against this, and we have never had an employment-related dispute.

Who helps with the immigration process?

VanHack's Global Mobility team assists with the entire visa process, using the Global Talent Stream — the fast-track visa for tech talent moving to Canada.

$25K per engineer, per year. Will you be next?

Contract to relocation in 2–4 months, visa handled by our licensed consultants at no cost.

Grow Canada's tech economy — and your bottom line.
