About the Role

This is a high-impact, visionary role centered on a greenfield editorial transformation. As the Lead WordPress Engineer, you will architect and build a scalable suite of WordPress plugins designed to modernize the newsroom experience.

This project isn’t just about moving to a new CMS; it’s about "editorial empathy." You will be tasked with replicating and enhancing the UX of the legacy Methode workflow within Gutenberg, ensuring a seamless transition for journalists. While you will provide high-level architectural leadership—navigating complex multi-site strategies and enterprise caching—this is an active contribution role. You will be "in the trenches," writing production-ready code, solving complex data transformations (Gutenberg to Pug), and establishing the engineering standards for the entire project.

Most Important

  • Proven experience defining and building large-scale, enterprise-level WordPress solutions, specifically navigating the trade-offs of multi-site vs. single-site architectures.
  • Extensive experience building and maintaining applications that meet the rigorous security and performance standards of the WordPress VIP ecosystem (familiarity with "NewPress" is a major plus).
  • Deep mastery of React, TypeScript, and advanced Gutenberg-specific state management using @wordpress/dataand data stores.
  • Mastery of modern OOP PHP (7.4/8.x) and an absolute understanding of the WordPress rendering lifecycle, including experience with custom templating engines like Pug.
  • Mandatory experience with Docker-based local environments, CI/CD pipelines, and a "shift-left" testing philosophy utilizing Jest, PHPUnit, and E2E testing.
  • A commitment to daily code commits and the ability to lead by example through high-quality, heavily tested pull requests.

Nice To Have

  • Experience with AWS SQS and Lambda functions, as the project's content API is hosted within AWS.
  • Experience navigating legacy asset management systems and bridging the gap between old-school editorial tools and modern web tech.
  • Prior knowledge of leveraging curated plugin repositories for enterprise-level deployments.

Includes 3 screening questions.
