About the Role

Our hiring partner is looking for a Product Owner who can turn product direction into clear, actionable work for engineering teams. In this role, you'll work closely with the Product Engineer (who leads the roadmap), as well as engineering, customer success, and operations, to ensure every initiative is well-researched, well-documented, and ready for development.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys deep discovery work, values clear documentation, and can balance business priorities with technical realities.

Key Responsibilities

Backlog & Story Development

  • Break down roadmap initiatives from the Product Engineer into structured, detailed stories.
  • Collaborate with engineers to refine scope, clarify acceptance criteria, and ensure alignment on implementation.
  • Keep the backlog organized, prioritized, and estimated for upcoming sprints.
  • Continuously groom stories based on new insights, shifting priorities, and stakeholder input.

Discovery & Requirement Research

  • Conduct research, user flow analysis, and data gathering to support story definition.
  • Work with the Product Engineer and internal teams to validate problems and proposed solutions.
  • Document dependencies, edge cases, and expected outcomes to reduce ambiguity.
  • Monitor customer feedback and internal pain points to inform refinements.

Delivery Support & Cross-Team Collaboration

  • Participate in standups, sprint ceremonies, and retrospectives.
  • Serve as the go-to contact for engineers during development, providing clarity and context as needed.
  • Review completed work against acceptance criteria for quality and alignment.
  • Support testing, documentation, and release preparation alongside QA and support teams.

Stakeholder Communication

  • Keep stakeholders updated on progress, blockers, and key timelines.
  • Provide clear release notes, documentation, and context for new functionality.
  • Help bridge communication between technical and non-technical groups.

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify gaps or inefficiencies in refinement, estimation, and delivery processes.
  • Encourage strong documentation habits and reusable patterns.
  • Contribute to operational improvements and smoother collaboration across teams.

Required Skills & Experience

Experience

  • 3–5 years in a Product Owner, Business Analyst, or similar coordination role.
  • Experience working in agile, sprint-based development environments.
  • Background in fintech, SaaS, or highly regulated/data-sensitive products is an asset.
  • Proven ability to convert high-level concepts into clear, developer-ready stories.

Technical & Process Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of the software development lifecycle.
  • Ability to interpret and discuss technical concepts (APIs, integrations, architecture diagrams, etc.).
  • Experience with Linear, Jira, or similar product tracking tools.
  • Familiarity with release workflows, QA processes, and user acceptance testing.
  • Comfortable acting as a liaison between technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Soft Skills

  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational ability.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Analytical, precise, and thoughtful in problem-solving.
  • Able to manage multiple streams of work and prioritize effectively.
  • Collaborative, proactive, and comfortable with fast-paced environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in fintech, tax technology, or financial services.
  • Knowledge of U.S. and Canadian tax processes.
  • Understanding of API-first product development.
  • Familiarity with compliance and audit requirements in SaaS.
  • Experience with automation, AI-assisted workflows, or internal tools.
